Training to support Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing
We have provided training opportunities to those that work in Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing to strengthen cultural safety and build cultural awareness across the sector. In the 2021-2022 we hosted training to over 100 workers that support Aboriginal people to be trained in the following programs:
Marumali
The Marumali Program® is based on the Marumali Journey of Healing Model, developed by an Aboriginal survivor of removal policies. It aims to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service providers in the provision of safe, appropriate and effective support to survivors of removal and assimilation policies. Participants are equipped with strategies to deal with the complex issues of trauma associated with removal practices in a variety of settings, strategies which respect the rights of survivors to control the pace, direction and outcome of their own healing journey.
Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid
The 14-hour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid course is for any interested adult. You will learn how to assist an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence based action plan. This course is based on evidence from the expert consensus of Aboriginal mental health professionals, many of whom also have lived experience of mental health problems.
Narrative Therapy
Narrative therapy involves ways of understanding the stories of people’s lives, and ways of re-authoring these stories in collaboration between the therapist and the people whose lives are being discussed. It is a way of working that is interested in history, the broader context that is affecting people’s lives and the ethics or politics of this work. It is a hopeful approach. When using narrative approaches, it is often possible to address serious problems in playful and respectful ways
